Uncluded - "Hokey Fright"
As soon as something is described to me as "quirky" I'm out...I can't hang. I immediately picture the most ironic of hipsters praising their latest bootleg of Tuvan throat singing while wearing some obnoxious pastel t-shirt announcing to the world that they "run on puppy power...quirky indeed
This record will probably be described as quirky by the blogosphere but please friends, do NOT let that turn you off.
This is probably the most lyrically well-crafted album to grace my ears so far this year. Kimya Dawson's gentle, quasi-innocent words dance around the gruff verbal maypole that Aesop Rock has firmly planted into a musical landscape that could easily be straight from the pages of the brothers Grimm.
Humor twirls with sadness, introspection bows to sharp observation, minutea has meaning...this record is deeper than it appears yet it can easily be put on as background music to make heads bob.
TLDR? - Magic words from Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock.
It's very, very nice to be back in this chair behind the mic today. Don't get me wrong, I had a BLAST in the desert last weekend, but for as much as I love witnessing live music - I love talking about it with you even more.
My Favorite Performances from Coachella 2013
As for my on-air tease today regarding an 80/35 tie-in, the Wu-Tang Clan absolutely destroyed The Outdoor Stage on Sunday night. I had my reservations going into their set as the Wu are notorious for late/$#!tty/incomplete/phoned in performances but this set was a highlight of the entire weekend. All surviving members were seemingly having the time of their lives running through a setlist containing everything a stalwart Wu fan such as my self would want to hear.
If you are at all on the fence about getting tickets to see them (along with dozens more quality acts) at 80/35, I will tell you this. If Des Moines gets half the show I did then you are in for a real treat that first weekend in July.
Fun Fact #1 - When your driver's liscence expires in the state of California, there is not the same 60-day grace period that we enjoy here in the tall corn state.
4 Days Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Free
Well kids, I'm out for a week and I hope you can survive without me. I'll try to keep you all posted on my Coachella adventures via Facebook/Twitter/Instagram (TonyTarbox). See you guys in a week!
Quick story - I was washing my travelling pants at the laundromat last night (sorry, no #laundryops - my phone was dead) - but there was this HUGE dude and this itty-bitty lady listening to this song inbetween doing cadence marches....straight weird homie.
Fun Fact #1 - Komodo Dragons can not run and breathe at the same time.
(really though, neither can I)

I couldn't do it....I broke down all weekend and absorbed everything I could via Twitter/Reddit regarding Coachella weekend 1.
I was laughing my ass off as R.Kelly Daft Punk'd 80K molly-addled festival goers during Phoenix's set on Saturday amid rumors that the French dance duo were going to make an appearance with their fellow countrymen on the main stage at the desert festival.
Look - I've seen some magical things in my life. Things that should/could never be repeated for any reason. They remain rooted in memory, awaiting a time when they are needed for nostalgia or to just cheer me up.
To artificially recreate those exact things, never works and only ends up cheapening the experience that you had before.
That's how I feel about all of the folks over in the California desert this weekend who were so desperate to see a repeat of 2006's game changing DP performance.
If you weren't there in '06, too bad. It sucks that you missed that moment, but that magic has been spent and will never happen again.
You should be looking for NEW magic in young and upcoming bands that surround you today.
In any case - while everyone at Phoenix's set got rick-rolled, I was kicking off my festival season at GDP and was BLOWN away by the warmth and talent that exuded from the hearts and minds of festival performers and volunteers alike.
For me, it was as awesome as the first epic GDP that served as The Envy Corps' proper headlining party.

Thanks DMMC & Iowa music fans for such a great event.
I need to ask you guys a favor - you have great musical taste (why else would you be here reading this blog?!)
So what I need from you is to watch the webcast of Coachella weekend 1 and let me know without spoiling anything what sets I should see that might not be on the list I posted a few days ago.
OR, if you just want to watch the sets from: Metric, Johnny Marr, Alt-J, Passion Pit, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur and dozens more throughout the weekend, click below to get started...
Gah! I feel like I should go on a self-imposed internet blackout so that things are a bitchin surprise for me next weekend in the desert!
Fun Fact #1 - The condo we're staying at has a bidet - I will have the cleanest puckerbutt in the desert next weekend.
