Uncluded - "Hokey Fright"
As soon as something is described to me as "quirky" I'm out...I can't hang. I immediately picture the most ironic of hipsters praising their latest bootleg of Tuvan throat singing while wearing some obnoxious pastel t-shirt announcing to the world that they "run on puppy power...quirky indeed
This record will probably be described as quirky by the blogosphere but please friends, do NOT let that turn you off.
This is probably the most lyrically well-crafted album to grace my ears so far this year. Kimya Dawson's gentle, quasi-innocent words dance around the gruff verbal maypole that Aesop Rock has firmly planted into a musical landscape that could easily be straight from the pages of the brothers Grimm.
Humor twirls with sadness, introspection bows to sharp observation, minutea has meaning...this record is deeper than it appears yet it can easily be put on as background music to make heads bob.
TLDR? - Magic words from Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock.
My Record Store Day purchases came in the mail!
I decided to pick up something from a new (to me) band and the silliest release I could find this year.
For the new band, I went with Church Mouth re-release from Portugal. The Man #390 of 500 on bone-colored vinyl and the vinyl Chessbox Edition of Liquid Swords from GZA.
The GZA album is easily the best of the individual releases from the Wu-Tang clan and arguably the best Wu release since Enter the 36 Chambers. RZA's production is tops and GZA's verbal playground is on display in so many great ways throughout the entire thing.
Here's my favorite track:
Fun Fact #1 -Samurai believe that one must never ever draw their sword without drawing blood.

Got a sweet new dream-pop album in the mail from our friends at Sub Pop Records.
Strange Pleasures from the band Still Corners.
I'll spend some more time with it and do a full write-up in a bit. For now, check out this little taste:
Kind of Beach House meets La Roux, no?
Fun Fact #1 - You can have anywhere from 4-7 dreams in one night!

Balls! I forgot to show you guys this.
It's me in front of the T-Rex from Pee Wee's Big Adventure - you know the part where Pee Wee asks Simone the diner waitress about her big "but" before her boyfriend Andy rains on their parade? YES!
Fun Fact #1 - The T-Rex average lifespan was about 30 years!
5 Minutes RAWRGGG Free
It's very, very nice to be back in this chair behind the mic today. Don't get me wrong, I had a BLAST in the desert last weekend, but for as much as I love witnessing live music - I love talking about it with you even more.
My Favorite Performances from Coachella 2013
As for my on-air tease today regarding an 80/35 tie-in, the Wu-Tang Clan absolutely destroyed The Outdoor Stage on Sunday night. I had my reservations going into their set as the Wu are notorious for late/$#!tty/incomplete/phoned in performances but this set was a highlight of the entire weekend. All surviving members were seemingly having the time of their lives running through a setlist containing everything a stalwart Wu fan such as my self would want to hear.
If you are at all on the fence about getting tickets to see them (along with dozens more quality acts) at 80/35, I will tell you this. If Des Moines gets half the show I did then you are in for a real treat that first weekend in July.
Fun Fact #1 - When your driver's liscence expires in the state of California, there is not the same 60-day grace period that we enjoy here in the tall corn state.
