Uncluded - "Hokey Fright"
As soon as something is described to me as "quirky" I'm out...I can't hang. I immediately picture the most ironic of hipsters praising their latest bootleg of Tuvan throat singing while wearing some obnoxious pastel t-shirt announcing to the world that they "run on puppy power...quirky indeed
This record will probably be described as quirky by the blogosphere but please friends, do NOT let that turn you off.
This is probably the most lyrically well-crafted album to grace my ears so far this year. Kimya Dawson's gentle, quasi-innocent words dance around the gruff verbal maypole that Aesop Rock has firmly planted into a musical landscape that could easily be straight from the pages of the brothers Grimm.
Humor twirls with sadness, introspection bows to sharp observation, minutea has meaning...this record is deeper than it appears yet it can easily be put on as background music to make heads bob.
TLDR? - Magic words from Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock.
It's going to be a minute before I'm actually faced with this decision, but if I had to pick one next generation gaming console over the rest on pain of death, I'd say I'll choose the PS4...
Three big reasons:
EVERY GODDAMNED TIME I TURN ON THE XBOX THEY WANT ME TO BUY SOMETHING. I am about 5 years out from my last paid television subscription because the commercials were getting ridiculous and the content was weak. While I will admit that knowing about new releases is sometimes nice, I'm pretty clued in on what's coming down the line and don't need to be reminded every time I sit down for a Borderlands 2 session that Sesame Street for Kinect has new DLC or that State Farm is the official insurance carrier for hardcore gamers.
I do love me some hot-n-stiff RPG action and while Mass Effect 1, Skyrim, Final Fantasy, Borderlands and Torchlight scratched that itch a little (none of those were xbox exclusives either) I missed out on a TON of premiere PS3 exclusive RPG's, most notably Ni No Kuni. :(
So I get new map packs for COD a month before my PS3 brethren. That is the only game that I play that offers this and my interest in this series is waning fast. Other Xbox exclusives (Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect) were all used as downtime summer fill for me. Picked all those titles up on the used front extra cheap and banged them out when there weren't any tentpoles to otherwise climb.
The only thing that continues to sway me the least is that the vast majority of my buddies who fart around with video games do so through their 360's. This may change as they are starting to get fed up with all the dumb money grabs and the exclusives for Xbox are wearing as thin with them as they are me....and the controller....God do I hate the PS3 controller.
We'll find out in a few months what present will be under the tree for me but again, knowing what I know now and if I was made to choose - it would be a Sony world for me.
Fun Fact #1 - The first gaming system I ever bought with my own hard earned monies was the Playstation 1.
