Uncluded - "Hokey Fright"
As soon as something is described to me as "quirky" I'm out...I can't hang. I immediately picture the most ironic of hipsters praising their latest bootleg of Tuvan throat singing while wearing some obnoxious pastel t-shirt announcing to the world that they "run on puppy power...quirky indeed
This record will probably be described as quirky by the blogosphere but please friends, do NOT let that turn you off.
This is probably the most lyrically well-crafted album to grace my ears so far this year. Kimya Dawson's gentle, quasi-innocent words dance around the gruff verbal maypole that Aesop Rock has firmly planted into a musical landscape that could easily be straight from the pages of the brothers Grimm.
Humor twirls with sadness, introspection bows to sharp observation, minutea has meaning...this record is deeper than it appears yet it can easily be put on as background music to make heads bob.
TLDR? - Magic words from Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock.
That is the latest from Aeon Grey - Milk & Bullets. It also happens to be the lead single from the upcoming complilation from Uncommon Records - Uncommon Burners 2 which is getting the royal treatment release on 1/22. Here are the details on the release:
On January 22nd, 2013 we'll be releasing Uncommon Burners 2 which will feature the entire roster of Uncommon and celebrate Uncommon's recent history from circa '09 to now. The CD version will include a gate fold cover, dual full color poster, 16 tracks and a limited edition "Uncommon America" T Shirt. Now, we present the lead single from the compilation, Milk & Bullets, from Aeon Grey. Aeon Grey has been putting out standard breaking albums with his own label Central Standard going back several years, but he now joins forces with Uncommon for his debut Uncommon release, "Lead Breakfast" which is due in February. Visit www.uncommonrecords.bandcamp.com for the release of Uncommon Burners 2 on 1/22/13, it will also feature Uncommon vets like Adam Warlock, Short Fuze, Taiyamo Denku, Atari Blitzkrieg, Pruven, Agarha Audio and more as well as cameos from Billy Woods and Prince Po.
I'm very much looking forward to that Lead Breakfast album as Aeon doens't put out material that sucks and I'm itching to see what other treasures that comp holds.
If you want to order the comp check out Uncommon Records HERE
